DigitalSpy: Hannibal panel at Comic-Con: Everything you need to know in our live blog

01:18There will be a three-year time jump between episodes seven and eight, Dancy confirms. Will is somewhat more settled and well-adjusted, “but that doesn’t last very long, that domestic retreat that he’s found”.

01:16Will has just got the crap kicked out of him again and again this season – “It’s only just getting started!” Dancy interjects.

01:16Armitage didn’t revisit past portrayals of Dolarhyde, because he didn’t want to be influenced, but “I probably will go and watch those movies now”.

01:15“Why am I wearing flowers on my head?” Armitage asks. “I don’t know!” Dancy admits. Fuller says that the flowers represent the floral beauty and elegance of the fandom, which is adorable.

01:13“It’s exciting to get into the Red Dragon story, given the dynamic we have between Hannibal and Will,” says Fuller. “Will Graham is looking at Francis Dolarhyde as a version of Hannibal that he might be able to save, and Hannibal is looking at Dolarhyde as a version of Will that he might be able to corrupt.”

01:12“It’s an emotional thing for all of us,” Dancy says, “and it’s not over in the sense that we were fully committed and living this thing for several years, and that is still true right now in this moment.”

01:10Fuller confirms that Netflix passed on season four because Amazon already had the streaming rights. Meanwhile, Amazon actually were keen, but they wanted to do it immediately, and Fuller wasn’t comfortable with the timeframe they offered.

01:10“The way this season ends” paves the way for a potential movie, Fuller says, and both Dancy and Mikkelsen are very keen on the idea.

We’re not emotionally prepared for this. The annual Hannibal panel at Comic-Con – affectionately nicknamed the Pannibal by showrunner Bryan Fuller and his legion of loyal Fannibals – will be upon us in just a few short minutes, and it’s never been so bittersweet.

In case you’ve been living under a rock and are yet to hear, NBC canceled Hannibal last month, and though hopes are high that another distributor may swoop in and save the day, both Amazon and Netflix have already passed on producing a season four.

We have no idea whether today’s panel will bring any more encouraging news on season four, but what we do know is that Fuller will be taking the stage in Ballroom 20 alongside star Hugh Dancy, executive producer Martha De Laurentiis, and soon-to-be co-star Richard Armitage, who’s making his debut as Francis Dolarhyde in an episode airing just under two weeks from now.

So buck up, Fannibals, and follow along with all the action right here from 5pm PT / 1am UK time.

01:49And that’s our lot, Fannibals!

01:49“I really hope we get to see more,” Jensen finishes. Us too. Oh God, us too. The feature film has actually felt like the most plausible next step to us for a while now – it’s easier to imagine a scenario in which Gaumont & co could obtain financing for a feature than for a new series sans US distributor. So we’re going to keep everything crossed, and we suggest you do the same.

01:48“Thank you for three years of imaginative, creative, disturbing brilliance,” Jensen says to conclude, and we have to stop typing to join in the rapturous applause…

01:47De Laurentiis says that a lot of the Florence shooting was “guerilla style – we had some security, but you can’t block off Florence and shoot. So it was the cooperation we had with Hugh and Mads, just gunning it and getting it done, and eating lunch in alleyways…” “And more wine,” Dancy adds.

01:46Armitage recalls having his tattoos painted on, and specifically having two makeup artists “at my naked backside, painting… the crack.” Wow. That is… some job.

01:46There was a moment while filming the finale, Dancy says, where he and Mikkelsen and Armitage found a bottle of wine after a long night’s shooting. “The sun was coming up, we were running out of time and we just had a glass of wine together, and… that was just a wonderful moment.” An “awwww” comes over the crowd. THIS SHOW CAN’T BE OVER. IT JUST CAN’T.

01:45What has their favorite behind-the-scenes moment been from season three? “Continually, my favorite moments are the collaborations with Hugh and Mads,” says Fuller. “They’re very opinionated, in a very wonderful way that is such an asset for a showrunner, because we’re all writing from a writer’s point of view, and then we get to work with actors who can tell a story in a way that elevates what we do. So often I get re-inspired to write after conversations with Hugh and Mads.” He understands new things about the characters after talking to the cast. ‘One of my favorite things about working on the show is working with actors who have my back.”

01:43How does Fuller work with food stylist Janice Poon to make the food emotionally relevant? “She suggests dialog,” Fuller reveals. “I’ll say ‘they’re having a meal, this is the context of it, what would they be serving’, and she comes back with suggestions.” It’s an incredibly collaborative process.

01:41A lot of Francis Bacon influence went into Hannibal, says Fuller. “And a lot of bacon. Sorry,” Dancy jokes, immediately apologizing for his own meat pun.
01:41“I actually don’t find the William Blake paintings particularly disturbing, I think they’re quite celebratory and marvellous,” says Armitage, referring to the paintings that inspire Dolarhyde.
01:39Red Dragon is about a man transformed and inspired by a work of art – have the panel ever been inspired and transformed by a piece of art?
01:38“I think you should only do a rape story when you have the real estate to explore exactly what kind of a violation that is,” Fuller continues. “Often on television they don’t, and it’s just thin and shallow and lazy.” Pause for huge and deserved applause. So Dolarhyde’s sexual deviance is “there if you want to see it, but I don’t want to see it myself.”
01:37How did Fuller approach Dolarhyde without including all of his sexual deviancies from the book? “There’s some implications of that, but I wanted to keep the promise that we were not going to be telling rape stories, so it became more about the assault on the family unit than an assault on the woman in the family unit, specifically.” Guys, I’m not feeling good about Will’s new domestic life right now.
01:36The interaction with fans on social media is “inspiring and beautiful” says Fuller. To have a low-rated show with this kind of response from fans is “the best hug that you could imagine”. This PANEL is the best hug we could imagine, to be honest.
01:34The Red Dragon arc will bring a new musical sound, Siouxsie of Siouxsie and the Banshees has composed a song specifically for the show. “It’s epic, it feels like a James Bond theme, but you might have to wait until the finale,” teases Fuller.
01:32“Bryan shed a lot of tears, and it was a lot of hard work,” says de Laurentiis. “WE LOVE YOU,” screams a fan, and the whole room applauds. The love in here is really, really palpable.
01:30“To be part of something that was so embraced and engaged with, with such open-heartedness and love and enthusiasm, is a privilege,” says Dancy, echoing Fuller’s statement. It’s dusty in here, okay? And we have allergies.
01:29A fan thanks Fuller for not telling rape stories, before asking what each of them will miss the most if the show never comes back. “For me, it would be the Fannibals, and the very special connection we have with this overwhelmingly supportive and passionate fan community.” We’re not crying. You’re crying.
01:28What are Fuller’s inspirations for the show? “I love David Lynch, I am so excited about the new Twin Peaks – I love David Cronenberg, a lot of the body dysmorphia horror… I love the slickness of Stanley Kubrick, there’s a lot of Tony Scott in this season with The Hunger… I love visually aggressive filmmakers, and we try to be visually aggressive with Hannibal.’
01:27Which is their favorite Hannibal costume? “I like the charcoal with the cranberry window-pane three-piece suit, that’s one of my favorites,” says Fuller. He even had one made for himself.
01:26There was no good outcome for Will in season two, says Dancy – he couldn’t run away with Hannibal and Abigail, but he couldn’t assist Jack any more either. “I don’t think that world where he and Hannibal and Abigail were on the run in Italy was ever possible – Will is too divided for that.” But he does end up in Italy, he points out!
01:25What would it have been like if Will, Hannibal and Abigail had gone to Italy together? “That was part of the decision to explore that in episode two, and what would have happened, exploring the alternate universes… I think that’s what Will was thinking when he brought Abigail with him, is that they were going to reunite in his head in some way, and that was how he was dealing with the grief.”
01:24“I’d be that guy in the tree,” says Dancy. Armitage chooses the Damien Hirst–style slicing of Bev.
01:24If the panelists had to die in any way that a victim died from the show’s history, which method would they choose? Oh man. “I wouldn’t mind the cello,” Fuller says. “I think it would be awesome if somebody played me.”
01:23Dolarhyde’s tattoo is a kind of clothing to him, Armitage continues.
01:23How much of the sexual aspect of Dolarhyde makes it onto the screen, given they’re on NBC? “There’s something about Dolarhyde which has a kind of innocence to him, which sounds odd considering how complicated and dark his world is, but it was always fluctuating between an innocent, childlike mind and a very complicated man. So I spent half this series semi-naked…” And Fuller interjects; “You’re welcome!”
01:22Will we be getting the short shorts from Manhunter? “There are short shorts in our Red Dragon story,” Fuller confirms. “They’re a little too short,” Armitage confirms. Will doesn’t have the short shorts any more – he gave them to Francis Dolarhyde, Fuller jokes.
01:21“I love emotional plotting as opposed to plot-plotting,” says Fuller. “Hugh and I were saying last night, there’s some scenes that we’re watching, and we’re like ‘…What did we mean? I understood it when I was saying it’, but you look at the scene and go ‘Wow, that’s pretentious’.”
01:20How does Fuller balance his ‘pretentious’ dialog with moving the plot forward, asks a snarky fan. Fuller takes this in very good spirits – “Harris’s writing is so bloated and purple and lovely that that’s where most of the most pretentious dialog comes from. It’s things that were never meant to be dialog, but I’m just fetishistic about his writing.”
01:19All this dirty talk is made so much better by the fact that the entire panel are wearing flower crowns, by the way. We can’t really do justice to the visual.
01:19“They didn’t catch the spitters are quitters thing. There was a lesbian sex euphemism in the second season,’ Fuller says. They get away with a lot simply by being verbally sneaky. “I Googled ‘lesbian sex euphemisms’, and button-stitching came up, and they said that would work.”
01:18Did they get ANY push back from NBC on Mason Verger’s “spitters are quitters” line? None! And Fuller reveals that line came out of a conversation he had in an elevator with Caroline Dhavernas last year at Comic-Con.
01:09“We are still looking, we don’t have a lot of answers, and we’re looking at the possibility of a feature,” Fuller reveals. OOOOOOH.
01:09“NBC allowed us to do some crazy s**t for three years!” Fuller points out.
01:09Jensen begins with the burning question on everyone’s minds… the cancellation. Mass boos are coming from the crowd.
01:08Martha de Laurentiis, Richard Armitage, Hugh Dancy and Bryan Fuller have taken the stage, and Fuller is wearing a characteristically SPECTACULAR jacket.
01:07One other teaser for that season three preview, which we hope will be online very soon: “Hello, Dr Lecter.” The right way round this time.
01:07DEAR GOD, the second half of season three looks stunning. We are quite genuinely shaking.
01:06Oh wow. Oh wow. Oh wow. We just had our first full glimpse of Richard Armitage as Francis Dolarhyde, and let’s just say this is going to be, without question, the show’s most compelling villain yet. Both visually and emotionally.
01:02Moderator Jeff Jensen is now on stage: “Being a Fannibal this season is like being Will Graham. We’ve had our brains cut open… we’ve been thrown from the train with whiplash turns both on screen and off…” And now we’re getting a preview of the rest of the season! Be right back…
01:01And we have our first wendigo in the crowd!
00:56We’re just about five minutes away from getting started here in Ballroom 20, and so far we have counted 6 flower crowns.
