Four genres. 64 shows. Almost 1 million total votes.
Our 2014 “Fandom Wars” proved that fans will turn out, and in big numbers, to prove their love for their show and their community to everyone online.
So what fandom came out on top this year?
It was close, but in the end, the “Hannibal” fandom, propelled with help from the show’s writers, producers and official accounts, came out on top over the “Arrow” fandom, 53% to 47%.
Of note: Out of the staggering 811,245 votes cast since “Fandom Wars” began on Sept. 7, “Fannibals” votes were a whopping 321,642 of them. That’s more than a third of all the votes, for all the shows.
‘Hannibal’ executive producer Bryan Fuller says a cookbook with Hannibal Lecter’s recipes is on the way, along with a book featuring art from the show.
Watching the TV series “Hannibal” is a mouth watering and stomach churning experience. Based on the Thomas Harris novels about Hannibal Lecter (previously turned into the Oscar-winning film The Silence of the Lambs), the show stars Mads Mikkelsen as the title character, a gourmet chef who cooks up delectable dishes in every single episode. Each one looks delicious and yet, since Hannibal Lecter is also a cannibal, we weren’t entirely sure we would want to eat them… until now.
CraveOnline has learned from “Hannibal” executive producer Bryan Fuller that plans are underway to release a cookbook based on Hannibal Lecter’s recipes from the TV series, so you too can whip up dishes like braised beef lungs, parmesan crumbled lamb’s brains and chicken liver paté.
“That is in development,” says Bryan Fuller in a recent CraveOnline interview about “Hannibal” Season 2 and 3 (coming to Blu-ray on September 16, 2014). “Yeah, there’s a cookbook in development and there’s also a fantastic ‘Art of Making of Hannibal.’ […] I saw some pages from it. It’s a gorgeous book.”
When asked if the cookbook would feature all of the recipes from the TV series, or also include new recipes or recipes from the Thomas Harris novels, Fuller responded, “I think ‘yes’ is the answer to that question.”
Fuller did not specify a release date for either of the upcoming tomes.
So get your kitchen ready and break out your rolodex of the rude, because a “Hannibal” cookbook is finally on the way. Just be careful when eating those Ortolan buntings… the bones can really do a number on the roof of your mouth.
This award goes to a new fan favorite on the block, whose powerful fanbase exploded into a true behemoth in the past year. Winner: Hannibal
The disgustingly delicious cannibal drama caught on quickly, gaining more and more fans with each bloody good episode.
The most deadly serious drama on TV once again has a funny gag reel: Below, EW has the exclusive outtakes from season 2 of NBC’s acclaimed thriller, PLUS details about the season 2 DVD release PLUS season 3 scoop from the show’s Comic-Con panel.
First the gag reel: The scenes include dancing in the morgue, Mads Mikkelsen forgetting how to tie his tie, Gillian Anderson losing her microphone down her shirt, and plenty of crack-ups during the show’s signature terse dining scenes. The clip (which was briefly leaked online earlier this year) is part of Hannibal‘s season 2 home video package, which we can reveal will be released on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD on Sept. 16. The disc packages will feature audio commentary with cast and crew on select episodes, a feature-length documentary on the making of episode 205, deleted scenes, and more.
Check out the gag reel below — which is a cut-down of the longer DVD version — which just played at Hannibal‘s Comic-Con panel. As you’ll see, Hannibal is so creepy that even when the cast is messing around, it’s still kinda creepy.
Now for season 3 scoop, direct from Ballroom 20 in San Diego:
– Eddie Izzard will return — despite being killed off: “We are writing a role for Eddie to return as a flashback,” writer-producer Bryan Fuller said.
– Raul Esparza (Dr. Chilton) will be back and plays an important role in the next season despite being shot in the face: “I told Bryan in my next season I expect to have eye path hump and parrot,” said Esparza.
– How will season 3 handle having separated Lecter and Graham? “One of the cool things being a Star Wars fan is when you separate R2-D2 and C-3PO they don’t become less interesting,” Fuller said. “We’re introducing a lot more characters from the novels some that haven’t been in the series yet.” Those characters include: The Florentine detective Rinaldo Pazzi, Hannibal Rising lover Lady Murasaki and, in episode 8, the Red Dragon himself Francis Dolarhyde. Fuller hinted, as you might expect from the inclusion of Pazzi, that Hannibal is headed to Italy.
– The third season will pick up one year after the season 2 finale and will get away from the show’s procedural format: “The entire first half the of season is relatively FBI-light,” Fuller said. “It’s all about the pursuit of Hannibal … the first episode is very much like a pilot for a new series starring Mads Mikkelsen and Gillian Anderson.”
– Hannibal producers are still trying to get the rights from MGM to include Silence of the Lambs protagonist Clarice Starling, but are not giving up. “We’re going to do a full-court press to get those rights,” Fuller said. “I want to complete the story.”
– Fuller revealed his two favorite deaths on the show: “The human cello,” he said. “And I’m particular fan of Michael Pitt cutting off his face and feeding it to the dogs.” Source
Before we get into what Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller said about the show’s upcoming third season at Comic-Con, we should explicitly point out that he reveals some SPOILERS about it. We won’t make a vague reference to what he spoils, because that itself would be a spoiler, but if you absolutely don’t want to know anything about what’s going to happen on Hannibal, stop reading now. Also, why did you click on this article, given its headline?
Now that the people who don’t realize Hannibal is a prequel have left—seriously, we already know almost everything that’s going to happen anyway—we can get down to it. For starters, season three will pick up a year after the bloodbath that ended season two, in which nearly every main character was either left dying on the floor or happily escaping the country with Gillian Anderson. This comes via Vox’s liveblog of the panel, which explains that the jump in time is being used to make it a littler harder to figure out who survived. Also, the FBI apparently will only play into one episode out of the first seven, with Fuller choosing to step away from the show’s “creative murderer of the week” structure for stories about Hannibal’s escape and the people who are trying to catch him.
Vox reports that a number of characters from the books will pop up, including Lady Murasaki and Commander Pazzi. Francis Dolarhyde will be the season’s “big bad,” indicating that—at the very least—some chunks of season three are going to start adapting events that happen in the Red Dragon novel. And speaking of characters popping up, Fuller confirmed that Raul Esparza’s Dr. Chilton did survive being shot in the face during season two, and that he would continue to play a part in the show for its next two seasons.
Fuller says Kacey Rohl’s Abigail Hobbes will make another appearance, but he didn’t explain whether that meant she was still alive or if she’ll be in a flashback/dream sequence. He also says he’s working on a behind-the-scenes book about the art of Hannibal, which will be a nice thing to leave on your coffee table if you ever have guests who love looking at grisly murders. Some television shows feel like they’re going to be smash hits before anyone’s seen a frame of footage; usually because of the writers working on it, the network’s reputation with its genre, or the popularity of the actors involved.
Other programs even feel like they’re simply too big to fail; such as HBO’s Game of Thrones and AMC’s The Walking Dead, which also benefit from having rich source material to mine and a ready-made, evangelical audience.
But what about the TV shows that felt like bad ideas before they’d aired – or even during their debut season – yet managed to overcome widespread uncertainties and grow into well-regarded programs it’s hard to imagine we were ever unsure about?
Let’s take a look at some recent examples of popular TV shows that didn’t initially feel like they’d work, but proved the doubters wrong…
7. Hannibal Expectation: A prelude to a long-running franchise that once enjoyed an extraordinary Oscar-sweeping high when Silence of the Lambs won five Academy Awards in 1991, but killed itself by unleashing a poor sequel (2001’s Hannibal), a weak remake of the earlier Manhunter (2002’s Red Dragon), and an embarrassing film prequel (2007’s Hannibal Rising)? And you also want to recast a character everyone associates with a lip-sucking Sir Anthony Hopkins?
Reality: Against all the odds for network US TV, this is easily the darkest and most disturbing drama around, filled with stomach-churning gore and violence that puts The Walking Dead to shame.
But it’s not just a beacon of depravity, because there are riveting performances from Mads Mikkelsen (putting Hopkins in the shade) and Hugh Dancy as tortured FBI profiler Will Graham. It’s so harrowing and twisted that it will only ever appeal to a niche audience, but that makes it all the more appealing. It’s one of TV’s best-kept secrets. Source
Lionsgate Home Entertainment has revealed that it will release on Blu-ray Hannibal: Season Two, starring Madds Mikkelsen, Hugh Dancy, and Laurence Fishburne. The release will be available for purchase on September 9th.
Exact technical specs and supplemental features to be included on this release have not yet been revealed.
Synopsis: Feed your fear. FBI Agent Will Graham hunts the most notorious serial killers. What he doesn’t know is his new partner is the most notorious serial killer of all.
Both a gift and a curse, Graham has the extraordinary ability to think like his prey—he sees what they see, feels what they feel. But while Graham is pursuing an especially troubling, cannibalistic murderer, Special Agent Jack Crawford teams him with a highly respected psychiatrist – a man with a taste for the criminal minded – Dr. Hannibal Lecter.
BuzzFeed asked some of network television’s biggest stars to share words of wisdom with their characters as the new season approaches. 11. Hugh Dancy (Will Graham, Hannibal)
“Move to Florida, now. Get ahead of yourself. I think that Will has the capacity to be a really — not healthy, exactly — but a happy person. I always think of him as a funny character who is having an extremely unfunny period in his life. He’s a lover who is turning into a fighter, and neither is working very well for him.”
